FT Leadoff

Subway Sweep, Astros Blossoming, Ohtani Makes More History

Shortly after Grimace was seen crushing beers on the concourse, the red-hot Mets swept the Yankees in the Queens edition of the Subway Series.

The Mets combined to hit seven homers in the series, with four coming off Yankees ace Gerrit Cole on Tuesday.

Wednesday’s 12-2 win put them back at .500 and improved their record to 11-2 since Grimace threw out the first pitch.

On the other hand, their pinstriped adversaries are in the midst of an uncharacteristic slump. The Yankees are 2-8 over their last ten games and have seen their AL East lead shrink to one game after the Orioles snapped a five-game losing streak on Wednesday.

These crosstown rivals will meet again for a two-game set at Yankee Stadium on July 23 and 24.

Don’t look now, but the Astros have the longest active win streak in MLB after winning their seventh in a row on Wednesday.

Spencer Arrighetti tossed an absolute gem, throwing seven scoreless while striking out ten en route to Houston’s 40th win of the season.

The Astros are 4.5 GB of Seattle in the AL West as they head to Queens to face the scorching Mets in a three-game set that begins on Friday.

Records are meant to be broken, especially if you’re Shohei Ohtani.

Ohtani entered Wednesday tied with Roy Campanella (1955), Augie Galan (1944), and Eddie Brown (1924) for the most consecutive games (9) with an RBI in Dodgers history. Shohei immediately broke that record with a leadoff bomb off Erick Fedde.

Gavin Stone then put a bow on LA’s fourth consecutive win by becoming the first Dodgers rookie to hurl a complete game shutout since 2013.
